The District Court has been told that over a week in October 2004, the drinks of 12 different people were spiked, probably with the drug Clonazepam, which is commonly sold as the epilepsy medication Rivitrol.
The court has heard that only two of the victims were from Sydney; others were from Perth, Adelaide, Japan, Korea, Switzerland and Sweden, and almost all had belongings stolen.
Chabli Djait and Adel Samadi have been charged with 15 and 13 offences respectively, including the sexual assault of two of the female tourists.
In making her opening address, Crown Prosecutor Natalie Adams told the jury that clothes, travellers cheques and digital cameras belonging to most of the victims were found at Djait's unit and that both men were identified by some of victims in photographs.
