LACKSBURG, Va. - As President Bush helped console a sea of Virginia Tech Hokies reeling from the “darkest day” in the college’s history, a disturbing portrait emerged of the gunman as a depressed outcast with a penchant for penning deviant tales of sex and violence.
Cho Seung-Hui, the 23-year-old South Korean killer now infamous for perpetrating the worst mass shooting in United States history, wrote an expletive-laden play about pedophilia, murder and family dysfunction that shocked his teachers. The one-act, 10-page play, titled “Richard McBeef,” was so graphic that his teacher reported him to a school counselor.
A loner, Cho was reportedly on prescription medication for depression, recently set a dorm room fire and was accused of stalking women, the Chicago Tribune reported.
While police say they have found “no evidence” of a suicide note, media reports say he left behind rambling letters ranting against “rich kids” and “deceitful charlatans” at the school.
Virginia State Police Col. Steve Flaherty said investigators were poring over “considerable writings” found in Cho’s dorm room. Among the items found at Norris Hall, where Cho executed 30 of the 32 victims, was a “bomb threat” note which court papers say “is connected with the shooting.” There have been several bomb threats at the 26,000-student college in recent weeks.
On campus, thousands of heartbroken students and parents packed the campus basketball arena and football stadium yesterday, hugging and crying as President Bush spoke at an interfaith ceremony to remember the victims.
Patricia McNulty, a 19-year-old freshman from Virginia, recalled how her roommate, Erin Sheehan, had to be let back into their dorm room because Sheehan’s keys remained in Norris Hall - pinned underneath a dead body. Sheehan was in her German class and escaped by pretending to be dead as the killer methodically picked off her classmates.
Leon Nolan, a cousin of Boston Celtic swingman [stats], also attended the memorial and sadly recalled his friend Erin Peterson, an 18-year-old freshman killed in the rampage.
