Current Affairs Sports Bernard E. Mclean on Coulter, Interrupted Justin Larsen on Coulter, Interr... More On Coulter...
"Witty and provacative? Ann Coulter? Sure she's on cable all the time, but that's because cable is CHEAP. I fail to see anything when it comes to Ann Coulter, but CORNY CLICHES ABOUT REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS that are worn out and outdated. She never talks issues she thinks she's CUTE AND SEXY with her worn out OLD CLICHES, and well next to DRAMA QUEEN RELL there's well pit those two together I'd to see partisan claws come out. Interesting how the politicians of my former state brag about this new ethics bill of theirs without any thought of what going on or what has gone on in one of the most corrupt states in the Union."
From Indianapolis: "Even if you despise Ann Coulter, how can you not see the hypocrisy in claiming to stand for tolerance, yet shouting down anyone who dares to disagree with you?
"Is this the kind of civics lesson that UConn students are receiving from their professors -- that anytime someone disagrees with you, just brand the person's opinions "hate speech" and you can claim the right to silence them?
"Maybe incoming UConn freshmen should be required to enroll in a diversity course. The only thing missing from last night's little drama was a good old-fashioned book burning.
"And will someone please explain to me how, if "security was tight with guards and campus police flanking the stage" (the Courant's words), that university officials couldn't have ejected the more juvenile members of the crowd and allowed the rest of the students to hear what their $16,000 was paying for?"
From Storrs: "What people fail to understand that last night there were not just UConn students present. Liberals from the entire state attended Coulter's so-called speech. What people also failed to mention was the fact that Coulter called her audience immature while she herself made immature rebuttals. Saying that she would tell her son that he was adpoted if he said he was gay is ridiculous (if she had a son). Answering a simple 'what do you think about pre-marital sex' question with 'You better come up with a better pick up line than that sweetie' is immature, is it not? Is this really the face that left-wing politicians want to present? I think not."
"How outrageous that an invited guest speaker should be subjected to such child like behavior regardless of the message. We have something called the First Amendment in this country.
"I suspect that the venom directed at Miss. Coulter is angst that she would dare to use the tactics of the Marxist Left to combat that same group.
"Awsome Story! I wish the news was filled with more stories such as this. I have never commented on a story before but I just happened to see the link on the bottom of the page and thought I would let you know how I feel about your article."
From Newington: "What a wonderful country we live in where the supposed aggressors (the conservatives) are actually the oppressed, and the supposed oppressed (the liberals) are the defacto aggressors. Until the democratic party learns to "fight fair" or finally ostracizes the far left, they will not win another presidential election. Democrats need to be strong, honest adversaries, not emotional, hypocritical bomb throwers. The students and teachers at college universities who display hostility whenever their opinion is challenged display the same disdain for pluralism that they are supposedly fighting against."
"Ms. Coulter's journalistic and verbal aptitude are no more controversial than Al Franken, Bill Press, or Maureen Dowd. It's merely offensive to the left that a woman-in this case a very well informed woman-has the audacity to rub their liberal noses in the dirt when it comes to hearing the truth. It's okay to cheer on a tool of the left like Cindy Sheehan; it plays to the Republican-hating agenda of the socialists. Ms Coulter provides some insight into the right-wing platform. The students with so much time on their hands can disagree with her and ignore her message. The same can be said of those who wish to shout down the likes of Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and John Kerry."
From San Diego: "I agree with Ann. Our side does not have a leg to stand on. We only seem to come up with hatred. Why can't someone intellectually debate her instead of trying to bully her. Hatred does not become us. I am beginning to think I am on the wrong side. Shame on all who are trying to infringe on her rights for freedom of speech."
"The Ann Coulter hecklers who are calling her a 'hate speaker' are the ones using hate attacks in their chants. Shouting 'you suck' is a personal attack which lacks a point and fails to challenge any of Ann's political or personal opinions. In contrast, Ann's comments, even when of a personal satirical nature, drive a political point. (i.e. her Kennedy remark) He is not a moderate Democrat and her sarcasm is targeted to highlight a political point, much like a comedian would do.
"A well articulated verbal challenge from a few of the campus Democrats who could intelligently debate would have been a better strategy. Surely there are at least a handful of intelligent Democrats on the campus debate team. Aren't there?"
From Aliso Viejo, Calif.: "In describing Ann Coulter, newswriters can't resist and make sure they never ever forget to use the adjective 'conservative' in their introduction of Coulter. As sure as they bend over backwards to define their prey, er, I mean subject, curiously whenever they write about one of their own, they never use the words liberal, socialist, collectivist or communist sypmathizing to describe like-minded individuals who tend to agree with them (the newswriters) on most issues. Newswriters, naive in a doe-eyed way to the reality of the world yet philosophically cynical towards ALL things American, do their best to promote their pet ideologies (collectivism, multiculturalism, environmentalism, ad nauseum ad infinitum) in the name of news coverage.
"And they still wonder why their ratings are hemmoraging as readers jump ship for more reliable, balanced and trustworthy sources of information."
"I think that college students should be respectful of speakers like Ann Coulter, even when they do not agree with her position. She happens to be a absolutely brillant person who could teach many students alot, even though she is sometimes rather harsh. So is life and so is the opposition. That's my take."
From Seattle: "How boring are these kids? Free speech is just fine with the liberal college crowd if you think/speak just like they do. Cindy Sheehan? PLEASE. Ann would distroy her in anything approaching a 'debate'."
From Scottsdale, Ariz.: "A well-written news story with a single exception: reporter bias revealed by omission. Why didn't the reporter/editor also quote some of the many who wanted to hear what Coulter had to say and thought it was correct?
"Thank God we have Coulter, Limbaugh, Hannity, Fox and the rest to counter this sort of stuff. In case the Courant hasn't noticed, the Sixties are over."
"It would be great if we lived in a world as soft and smooth as the liberal faction dreams we have. Then no one would need a big stick or a gun, but we don't. I venture most responsible, adult, gun owners hope and pray they never need use them, but they can and will should the need arise. No street punk or crack junkie will invade their space and harm them or their family. Again, we are all hoping and working for the soft, smooth, smell good world. But we have a ways to go yet. Read your newspaper."
From Jacksonville, Fla.: "Just who has the right to speak? Haters of America, Gays, Liberal and Democrate only? One comment in your article states that words are sharp tools and people like Ann use them to hurt people. Cindy Sheehan use her words to hurt people. And these same people who want to shut-up every body who's supporting President Bush. What is really going on is that the people hate President Bush because he is a man of faith. The people hate God and they hate anybody who confess to have faith in him. Free speech is only if you are saying what the left wants to hear. I am an American who happens to be black, I love this country and Ms. Coulter has a right to speak. The hecklers could have stayed home. They paid to make fools of themselves. I support President Bush and all his cabinet members. I support my right to say Merry Christmas."
"It does not appear that free speech is allowed in Conneticut! I always thought that freedom of speech was an unalienable right that was paid for with our forfathers lives? I once went to a Students For a Democratic Society meeting until I found that they did not permit free speech. They only had dictators on our campus. Sorry to hear that shouting down people is accepted in your state! It appears that some students did not mind spending $16,000 to yell Anne off the podium. Sad!"
From Fairfield: "There isn't a dime's worth of difference between Ann Coulter's comments and those from Howard Dean, Barbara Boxer, et al. All are guilty of racist, extreemist, hurtful and absurd comments.
"The difference lies in Ann's comments by nature are sarcastic while Dean & Co. are actually serious, which come to think of may be more funny. Good thing we have a place where those who take themselves so seriously while being so utterly inept can go and find employment where they can't hurt the rest of us in the real world. They call it Washington (thank you PJ O'Rourke)."
From Hernando, Miss.: "The story on Ann Coulter's UConn speech was very good -- as well as being wonderfully written. Thanks very much for the facts written as they should be."
"I found it very interesting that students at a University, where there is supposed to be an open exchange of ideas, would resort to such a childish form of protest. This is not about Ann Coulter or her political beliefs, but about CHILDREN that have not gained the ability to coherently debate an issue, so they start a chant. Let us be realistic, if you want to change the beliefs of someone deeply entrenched, or sway the fence sitter, you must present your case in an educated manner.
"In regards to Students Against Hate, it is about time they stop being thinned skinned and either stand up or shut up. The world is a much bigger place Ms. Hana Kim, and if "Asian chick" makes you so upset, how can you expect to actually be productive in real life? With the exception of actual cases of slander, words will only cause harm if you allow them. It use to be that only the strong would survive and succeed, but now our schools are pandering to the weak.
"Thank you for the great article. It affirmed my stand that if one of my children participated in such childlike behavior, I would pull their funding."
"Our constitution guarantees the right of any person to disagree with another but the "Left" refuses to acknowledge the right of "free speech" to anyone with whom it disagrees. Is this what they teach at UConn? They need to spend a little time in Iran, Saudia Arabia, North Korea or China. Their education has been neglected...a few nightsticks to the side of their heads would add immeasurably to their intellectual capacity."
From San Angelo, Texas: "Seems like this school only allows one point of view? Words hurt so we do not allow people to exercise the First Amendment right to speak at a University?"
From Danbury: "It's boggling to me how conservative views are instantly labeled as hateful by liberals and, in this case, how Ann's presentation must be "balanced" by another, simultaneous meeting (that actually has nothing to do with Ann Coulter or her views), instead of being listened to for its merits and then discussed or debated. Liberals are much more intolerant and hateful than conservatives and, more directly, are more active in suppressing free exchange of ideas. If a conservative notices difference its discrimination and if a liberal notices difference it's recognizing diversity. It's neat how that works. It is truly a shame the forest can't be seen for the trees."
